Dryer Vent Inspection Checklist

An honest inspection follows the same checklist every time so nothing important gets skipped. This is what we look at on every visit.

  • Dryer make and model noted
  • Transition hose condition
  • Wall or floor transition
  • Visible duct material (foil, plastic, semi-rigid, rigid metal)
  • Any visible disconnections or kinks
  • Signs of scorching or heat damage

Airflow test

  • Run the dryer briefly
  • Measure airflow at the outside or roof exit
  • Confirm vent flap is opening freely
  • Listen for unusual airflow inside walls

Exit inspection

  • Hood condition and screen
  • Bird nest or debris
  • Flap movement
  • Sealing around the hood
  • For roof exits: termination type and condition where safely visible

Hidden risk indicators

  • Lint piling up behind the dryer
  • Hot or humid laundry room
  • Lint in nearby vents or registers
  • Stains around the wall penetration
  • Burning smell during operation
