Dryer Vent Not Blowing Outside

What it usually means

A dryer pushes a significant volume of warm, humid air. When that air does not exit outside, it is being trapped by lint, blocked at the hood, or leaking inside the structure. None of those are good for the dryer or the house.

Most common causes

• Heavy lint blocking the duct
• Bird nest or animal debris at the hood
• Vent flap stuck closed
• Disconnected duct inside the wall or attic
• Roof termination clogged or capped wrong

What to check first

• Pull the lint screen and clean it
• Look up at the outside hood and clear visible debris
• Watch the flap while the dryer runs — does it move?
• Listen for airflow in the wall
• Check the attic if accessible for a loose or open duct

Why this matters

Trapped moist air rots wood, damages insulation, and feeds lint right back into the laundry room. It is also one of the most common patterns that leads to dryer fires.

Safety note

Stop using the dryer for long loads until airflow is restored. If you smell burning or the dryer overheats, stop using it entirely and schedule an inspection.
