Dryer Vent Safety Checklist
Walk through this checklist once a month and again before any season of heavy laundry. Anything that fails is worth a closer look — most items take less than a minute to check.
Monthly checks
- Lint screen is cleaned before every load
- Lint screen slot is vacuumed every few months
- Area behind the dryer is clear of clothing and lint
- No burning smell during or after a cycle
- Dryer cabinet does not feel unusually hot
- Cycle finishes in normal time for the load size
Outside checks
- Vent flap opens when the dryer runs
- Steady warm airflow at the exit
- No visible lint piling up around the hood
- No signs of bird nest or animal activity
- Hood is intact, with no cracks or missing screen
Annual checks
- Professional vent inspection at least every 1 to 2 years
- Duct material reviewed — replace foil with smooth metal where possible
- Roof vent inspected and cleared if your vent exits the roof
- Outside hood checked for wear and replaced if cracked
Red flags — stop using the dryer
- Burning smell
- Visible scorch marks behind or near the dryer
- Dryer keeps overheating or shutting off
- No airflow at the outside vent
