Lint Buildup Behind the Dryer

Why it happens

When the duct behind the dryer is crushed, loose, or partially blocked, lint escapes at the connection instead of being pushed outside. Over time it piles up against the wall, on the floor, and on the back of the dryer.

Common causes

• Crushed flexible foil hose behind the dryer
• Loose or disconnected duct connection
• Heavy lint buildup further down the vent line
• Old foil duct that has torn at a joint
• Vent transition that was never sealed properly

What you can check

• Carefully pull the dryer out a few inches
• Look for a torn, kinked, or disconnected hose
• Check for lint inside the wall opening
• Run the dryer briefly and watch for air or lint puffing out at the connection

What we inspect

We pull the dryer fully out, inspect the transition, check the duct condition inside the wall when accessible, and test airflow at the exit. Buildup behind the dryer is almost always a symptom of something else, and an inspection can help identify it.

Safety note

Lint near a heat source is a fire risk. Vacuum what you can see and avoid running the dryer for long cycles until the vent is inspected.
